Redwood Burls

Has anyone ever looked into this form of propigation?
http://www.redwoodgifts.com/index.c...product_nursery

i have recently put a bid on a redwood burl on Ebay, just to give it a go.

They say it is a great way to create a houseplant, but can also be used to start bonsai.

I am going to give it a go and let you all know how it progresses!

Any thoughts?

I bought a two of these at the Cost Plus Nursery about 6 years ago. I think they were maybe $4.99 or so. I put them in a flat with some redwood compost and bonsai soil and pretty much forgot about them except watering.

before planting I cut a 1/4" bevel around the base and dusted with rooting hormone.

Both sent up shoots. One rooted really well and has some 4' tall sprouts coming out of it now. The thing about the burls is you almost never get a sprout coming out dead center at the top. If you don't you need to either style it as a clump or live with the off-center look.

I'll have to get back into that flat and see what I have now!

Regards,

Matt

you probably have a small forest if you last looked at these 6 years ago!

they say they grow very fast.

I don't really know what to expect, so i guess anything will be good.

I did see one Burl on that site that looked intresting. Looked like a tree trunk already with a bunch of branches shooting off of it.

I will perhaps grow a clump style. the one i bid on is quite small, so I will restrict it to 2-3 trunks and nip off the rest.

I'll post some pics when i get it and keep it up as it grows.
