Pushing the limits
This is for you seed lovers out there.
I love starting seeds and so five years ago I purchased a pound of black pine seeds. I soon found out that this is enough seed to start your own forrest. So each year I have started a tablespoon or so of these seeds. Each year I think "these seeds have been in the refregerator for years they can't posibly be any good" Last year I got my best crop ever and the seeds have been in plastic bag dry as dust for (this spring will be five years) I will start some again this year and see how they do. I think that the reason that they have lasted so long is because of cold dry conditions. When I put them into water to soak they are all floaters but after two days in water almost all sink. If I get trees this spring I think it will be some kind of record, at least for me. .................ripsgreentree

Re: Pushing the limits
Interesting science experiment! What do you suppose you success rate is? I planted 4000 bl pine seeds one year and because of snails, damping off, and loss when I did root cutting(ala Bonsai Today) I ended up with 30 plants. A lot of work but fun anyway.

Re: Pushing the limits
Hey Rip, I don't know if you saw that shohin book that Grey brought back from Japan. It had a couple of pics of little accent plantings of black pine seedlings planted real close together. They are growing in a little clump. The little trunks are just match size or smaller and they are just going straight up about 2-3 inches, with just one little cluster of needles pointing straight up. They look way cool as an accent plant. I have some seeds and would like to know whan I should stick-um. Regards, Bonsaial
