Propagator "Tent"

Hello,

Following the propagation instructions in a bonsai book for a semi-ripe cutting, I put my cutting into a pot and made a "propagator tent" for it. According to the book, it helps keep the moisture in and keeps the plant warm.

However, the book didn't say how long I am supposed to leave this tent up. Anyone have any ideas or experience? Unfortunately my pot isn't see-through, so I can't tell if the cutting has grown roots or not.

A lot depends on the variety of your cuttings. I find a GENTLE tug at the plant if there is resistance then you have been successful. I stress a GENTLE tug other wise you could rip any roots thatare developing off. Hope this of help. Pup

I have started some chines elm cuttings in one of those little Tuperware shaker containers that you use to mix up protein drinks, etc. The body of the container is semi-transparent and the snap on lid is white. I can see the new white root shining through the soil and the tight lid keeps all the humidity in.
It works great. As the little cuttings inside get to the top of the container I will replace the top with a piece of cellophane kept on with an elastic and over a period of a week or three, I will slice holes in the top. Then the tree can slowly grow through it and acclimatize to a drier environment. If I was going to start bigger cuttings, I think I would try one of those 1 gallong pickle jars that I saw in a thrift store a while back.

Good luck with your propogating tent and also, keep on the lookout for new top growth showing.This also indicates rooting.

You should have some air circulation for the cuttings... like early morning or late evening.
