Propagation Method For Japanese Maple?

Anyone have an opinion on the most successful or fastest way to propagate japanese maple? We have a very healthy large one (10'-20') in our yard that could be used for layering or cuttings, or I'd also be willing to buy some seeds.

I am leaning toward cuttings or seeds because it seems that it would be easier to try many seeds or cuttings in a large bed or box and have more chances to produce something nice.

Also, would this information vary significantly for other maple varieties such as trident or others?

Juice,
Try them all. Experiment for yourself, it will be a rewarding experience. I've never had a failure on a layer of acer palmatum. If you start late sping you will see roots in 6 weeks. I usually wait until following spring to separate. In the meantime you can be shaping the top to a certain extent. Good luck
