Propogating By A Clipping (beginner)

Hi, I just registered here. I have had a bonsai before(a juniper, which died ... i went on vacation and noone took care of it :' ( ) but now i want to strart growing a new one. I have a japanese red maple outside my home, and it is very healthy, can anyone tell me the best way to propogate a branch clipping from that tree into my bonsai dish? thanks in advance

Do a search on this site for airlayering. There have been a couple of people who have provided excellent instruction with good pictures of this technique. Last year I sucessfully airlayered a japanese maple. This technique is by far the best and easiest, you can choose where on the tree, such as a nice fat branch with good movement. Also it produces a nice ring of even roots that will make terrific nebari on the tree as it ages.

hey thanks a bunch for that post on air-layering, I just might try it. Ive just got to find the time now...(time will be more available as spring makes its way along).

Maples are one of the biggest pains when it comes to propagate. Air layering is by far the best method with this trees Good luck
