Propagating Cherry from seed....?

Hi ya,

A fella from work brought in a bag of cherries for the shop from his yard yesterday. I saw the oppertunity and put out a bucket to save the pits.

I'm sure as far as common sense stuff goes I'll wait until this coming spring to try um but any one here grow cherries from seed?

I'm not sure as to the species. I asked the guy who brought them in to bring me a branch with some leaves on it so I can ID it. Being we're in zone 5, that already narrow's it down some.

The meat of the fruit is bi-colored clear and red and the tree is pretty big like in the 25 foot high x 25 foot wide range.

I'd appreciate any help I can get especially good help!!! Thanks -D

My question is,what sort of cherry is it ? I can recall planting cherry pits, from trees in people's yard, years ago,and they never sprouted, after over a year. Nanking Cherries (shrubs) grow easily from seed.I have a now five year old Choke Cherry, one of the few whose leaves will get smaller, which was propagated by seed from the forest service, which I planned to move to a garden plot,to fatten the trunk, but it's sooo difficult to make a good one,in the hard desert sand that passes for soil around here.

I really have no clue as to what is was he brought in from his yard. They were tasty and he said his tree is about 25 feet tall x 25 feet wide. The fruit was bi-colored and tasty that's all I really know. Maybe I should just put them in the soil in one of my beds and see what happens. If nature can do it once it can do it again for me right?
