Congratulations, Al - that there is BONSAI! As the rootbase develops you'll have a real winner here for sure! Is it planted in Calidama?

Regards,

Matt

Thank you very much Redpine and Matt. No... it is planted in the real-McCoy. Akadama! I have two trees in calidama as a test and a few bags that I use for planting collected stuff in. I am not sold on it completely yet.

It is very hard, almost too hard. I like akadama because it absorbs fertilizer very well and it breaks down just enough that roots can push thru it. If I wanted something this hard I could just use lava for half the price. Nearly the same in the long run.

When I look back at the picture of the trunk with the bark ringed, It makes me sad that I had to cut off nearly all those branches that were pretty well ramified. I need two more years to get back to that point.

taking into acount that I started the original project before bonsaiTALK even existed, this has been a long road.

....but I think it will be worth it.

But it's already a better tree thanks to your bold decision. Good thread!
