Please help!!!

Hello,

I am trying to grow bonsai (pinus pinea) from seed, I planted 4 seeds about 2 months ago and was really pleased when 3 of them grew quickly. Over the past couple of days they have started to droop and look generally 'unwell'. They are in a pot with bonsai compost, I water about every 2 days haven't fed at all.

I really want to save them so any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

Thank-you,

Kate.

If you'll fill out your profile with zone info and all that we can get someone to help you with alot more accuracy, and if there is any way you can get a pic up, of the trees, and let us know about where you keep them,..as far as inside or out in a window or on a bench etc. the more info we have the better we can help, which we love doing,...I personally am not much help when it comes to pines, or many other trees for that matter but, should you ever have a question about privet(ligustrum) I can most likely help there,xD. But there are MANY of us here who do know pines rather well and I am sure that these people are just itching to help you, and will as soon as they can.

Thank-you, I'll edit my profile now.

the plants are kept indoors, they have light but are not too near the window or any heaters. The heating is usually on though - probably about 22C. I'll get some pics on asap!

Sorry, I have just looked at all the zones and I am in the UK so I don't think they are relevant!

It is winter here (just coming to spring) and not all that much light - day light is from about 8am to 4pm and it is cold (about 0-5c), although as the seeds are inside I don't know if this matters.

Hello again,

Here are some pics of the seedlings - I have put some before and after so you can see what they looked like when they were stronger and now they have drooped.

Again, any ideas would be great!

Sorry to tel ya, Kate, but the droopy pines are not long for this world. A seedling that acts like that is certainly on its way out.

But, you are in luck! In London you can undoubtedly find a retailer who can sell you a good peice of starter stock for a few quid, and you can skip the 10 to 25 years it would otherwise take to turn a seedling into a decent bonsai!

Are they rooting at the collar ? If so, they may have damp. A type of fungus typical to seedlings.

Damping off is a sad event that many seeds get. If you start your seedlings in a sterile mix like perlite -vermiculite or use a fungicide to conteract the problem. Start by going back in time...
