Please clarify....surrouding plastic can lead to fungal infection?

I need a little clarification: I was reading "the Bonsai Handbook", by David Prescott, and on page 108, it was describing the process of planting softwood cuttings.

The part that threw me off was in step 3 "...make a plastic 'tent' supported by a wire frame. Do not allow any leaves to touch....the plastic tent, because this invariably leads to fungal infection of the shoot".

Is this only true with softwoods....or is it plastic in general with a new cutting? Reason being, I'm growing some schefflera cuttings and the instructions given to me included increasing the humidity by use of plastic bag (you know, ziploc)...but nothing was mentioned to me about leaves touching the plastic could cause fungal infection.

Just needed a little clarification....seems like quite a few of my plants are ensconced in platsic bags to increase the humidity!

Thanks

I wouldn't worry too much about the shefflera - They probably won't rot on you since they grow in an a tropical environment they're pretty well adapted to hot, sticky-wet conditions, and I'd expect them to root easily.

The advice for using a wire coathanger frame to keep the tent open is a good one, though When you get condensation in the confines of a bag, it can run down the sides and touch the leaves - just having the leaves wet isn't the problem - in a mist house you'd have fresh water hitting the leaves over and over. It's just that the water might be stagnant, stay there and prone to fungal growth either in the leaves or the soil.
