pine seeds

I recently got a few very small pine cones off of a tree in my backyard, let them dry out and had them bagged to collect the seeds when the pine cone opened and dropped the seeds... about how long do i have to wait untill they will sprout?

Re: pine seeds

They need to be stratified either by potting them up and leaving them outside over winter or by putting them in a ziplock bag with moist sand and into the fridge.

Re: pine seeds

Many of the pine seeds I have seen have a wing of sorts attached. You can rub them between your fingertips to remove this wing, then drop them in a glass of water and discard any floaters because these have low viability before you go through the process of planting or stratification.

Of course, I have always been tempted to plant just the floaters to see what would happen!

Re: pine seeds

Mac,
What type of pine have you in your yard? So many of the pine family don't make good bonsai, I hate to see you waste too much energy on a stinker!
