Pine Seedlings

Hey all, some advice if you will.

I collected some pine seeds a while a go and put them in the fridge mid june after 2 nights soaking in tepid water. I check them every week and found today (after not checking for 3 weeks due to exams) that 15 had germinated in the damp kitchen roll in the fridge, and some of them had produced quite substantial tap roots, but no top growth. What i did was take the germinated ones out of the fridge and put them on seed soil, then scattered a think layer of seed soil on top, the firmed it down to make sure the watering wouldnt sink the soil too much.
Did i do the right thing or should i have left them alone?

Thanks
Rowan

Rowan,
I don't know pine for sure, but I would think that if they just germinated and started to grow it may be a bit late in the season for them to harden off before winter arrives. If you do get them to grow you may have to provide special protection for the winter. Again I don't know your area and don't have experience with pines.

Maybe someone with more experience can chime in?

Its ok on that front i think, i will be getting a smallish greenhouse befor it gets coled here so i will have them in that, or just overwinter them indoors and get them outside next spring. we'll see, thanks for your help, but what i really meant was it a good idea to transplant them so soon?

Thanks
Rowan

Ahhh. I would say that if the seeds started to sprout in the fridge the it was a good idea to get them planted out.

Rowan,
I think the fridge part was a coincidence and just the fact that you soaked them made them sprout. You had good luck and should be thankfull.

You did the right thing because you didn't "transplant" them --you planted them, they need that to survive.

Sun,food water, time is all that remains!

Sorry, the poll options don't make any sense. I can't answer it and couldn't interpret the result myself. Two of the "answers" are somewhat identical

No = Should have waited longer

And one response does not adress the question at all, but a related question that is not exclusive of the first three options.

Could survive but only a small chance.

So, I can't answer your poll, because all the answers seem correct.

Yes! if the seeds are germinating, what can you do other than plant them?

No! it was too late in the year to germinate them

Yes, You should have waited longer to germinate them and sown them next spring

They could survive but it's unlikely they'll make it indoors unless you can control light, humidity and ventilation well.

In any case good luck, I will leave the poll going for awhile if it is meaningful to you.

P.S. . Don't water the seedlings from above. Rest the container in a tray of water for a few minutes, instead.

Good luck,

Matt

Ok thanks, Matt you can get rid of the poll, i dont normally bother with them anyway , hopefully they'll b alright indoors until next spring (unless they harden off sufficiently before winter in which case i'll put them outside), ive grown redwood seedlings indoors for 6 months and then planted them out and they are ok ach well if they dont survive i'll just plant some more, can always collect plenty near me

Thanks for the advice
Rowan
