Mmm mm
it's getting closer to winter everyday in melbourne town but as the weather turns grey there is a colorful fruit hanging over the fences that catches my eye, its a persimon and they taste rather good. I was just wanting to know, has anybody out there ever grown a persimmon from seed or cutting? and if you have, how do they perform as a specimen? a little guidance from anybody in the know would be much appreciated. kind regards, hortriot ps, there is nothing like a good read on a cold night. persimmon

If I am right, then if you follow this post to where I moved it (PROPAGATION) you'll see a bit about root cuttings in the Related Threads section in the footer.
Regards, Matt

willow
try crushing up or shredding some willow and put it in a bucket of water, let it sit for a day or two and then soak your cuttings in it for a couple of days, its a kind of natural rooting hormone.

Hortriot, Autumn before last, I gathered a number of Persimmon fruits which had fallen to the ground. I extracted the seeds and put them into normal bonsai soil in 2 or 3 available growboxes. I then overwintered them with the rest of my trees. In the Spring, nearly all of them sprouted and all have been growing radidly since, some of them in pots and growboxes, some in my growbeds. I do not know whether the exposure to cold was necessary or not; I merely report what worked for me. I did notice that there was considerable variation in when they germinated. I didn't notice much difference in the conditions they lived in. Just normal variability, I guess.
They are real nice and accept severe root pruning very well. The specific species I am working with is D. virginiana. I can only guess as to how easy or difficult it is to do what I did with other, related Persimmons. I am quite delighted with mine. Fred |
