new growth from oaK seedling

I had an oak seedling that I believe a squirrel had its way with. There was only about 1" of stem above the ground. Two days ago I was curious about the roots so I dug it up. The taproot had fresh growth on the end so I potted it in 100% akadama set it under a maple tree for shade except for the early morning and early evening. I guess what I'm asking is if I'm wasting some soil and superthrive or there is a good chance it will rebud next year?

It may put out new growth this year.

I have a ton of natural oak seedlings that fall from the tree and sprout. I mow right over them and it cuts every one off to a stub. Then they seem to sit dormant and before you know it *poof* more growth. This keeps repeating all season long until I get off my lazy butt and take a shovel to them and dig them out.

It can't hurt as you are learning what works for you. Good luck!

I'll keep watering and keep it in mostly shade. It would be a nice surprise to get new growth this year. I also have another little oak next to a shrub in the yard that I was thinking of transplanting next spring. I agree, the practice will do me good.
