zone 6? junipers are dormant now...difficult to root at this stage.
cuttings are usually taken when the plant is in its growth cycle
i've found the spring and autumn good times to get cuttings going. The heat of the summer hinders rooting as does the cold of winter, 70 degrees is good rooting temp. After clipping the cutting I clean off the growth from a couple inches up, dip the tip in a rooting hormone(not superthrive) root tone should work,
and place it in a 1" x 1" container with a medium of moist 1/2 perlite 1/2 peat moss, place it in a partly sunny spot and mist regularly. In a few weeks roots will begin to emerge and after six weeks roots will be well formed and light feeding feeding can begin..

I have a small indoor propagating green house with flourescent grow light. 70F, 80% humidity.
If I were to take juniper cuttings now, am I likely to be successful?

Thanks,
Joe MC

Joe I think it all depends if you're juniper is dormant at this time. It is suppose to be dormant in the winter. where do you have it? in a cold room or in that greenhouse?

The juniper ( a shimpaku) is outside.

We are having a very mild winter and many of my trees are breaking dormancy early. I am not sure if the juniper is or not though.

I'm itching to prune it a little and want to try to root the cuttings.

Would I be better off waiting until spring, or should I attempt now, using my indoor propagator for the cuttings?

Thanks,
Joe Mc

I've found that juniper are very easy to take cuttings from, and find that when pruning in spring a dip in rooting hormone and placing into cutting compst, the cuttings take in about four to six weeks without the aid of additional heat
