So, I know Dawn Redwoods air layer pretty readily. Does anyone have experience with cuttings? And if so, how big is too big? I have a Dawn that needs a good chopping, but I would like to save the top. I also however, would like to get started working on it this spring... layering IS an option, however not a preferred one. If rooting the top is not an option (it is about 2 inches thick) it may be tossed to the boneyard. I have seen some of you having great success with massive cuttings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never actually tried to root Metasequoia cuttings, but I understand it can be done with fair success. The best time is late spring (Mid-late June), using semi hardwood cuttings, approximately 4-6" in length. Treat the cut ends with rooting hormone, place in a free draining soil mix, mist frequently or cover with plastic and keep out of the sun. I've never attempted an air-layer with them, either, but assume it would be similar to air-layering a bald cypress. Good luck,
