Red Leaf Maple seedlings

Help, i don't want to kill the seedlings.

I purchased some seeds stratified them and potted them 1/1/2005, and hurry i have 33 trident maple seedlings so far. I would post a picture but no idea how.

Anyway I live in Upstate NY and today it is about 20F, I have them in a south facing window indoors out of reach of child and cat, which is how my last bonsai died .

What do i do now in order to keep them alive and well ? I have a long road ahead If i want them to be workable Bonsai, but right now i would just settle for them being alive.

Steph,
Sounds like you are doing fine. What is your worry? Are they declining in vigor, any damping off, what uppppp that has you scared ?

maple seedlings

Seedlings are doing great, I am up to 35 seedlings and about 75 % have second leaves the ones that look like trident maple.

All very exciting for me,

Bonsainut I guess I am worried as I have never grown anything from seed before, I don't want to make a mistake and have to start over, although i guess it is not the end of the world if i do.

So far so good.

Just don't over-water them! Over-watering kills seedlings like nothing else.
Good luck!

Keep them moist but not wet, keep them inside for now and then get them outside come spring ( i dont know your climate so id leave it to someone else to tell you about that)
Also, if you can get some liquid bonsai food use that once a month at normal dosage, this will help your seedlings because they need food as they are quite young.

Hope this helps
Rowan

Btw, i dont know how many seeds you planted but that would seem like a good success rate to me, you may have the nack i have 50+ species stratifying at the moment, i think i'll cry if 33 of each actually grow, what the heck would i do with nearly 1500+ young seedlings? lol n/m

Wow Rowan57 maybe you will have to change your name to 1500+.
I'm impressed that must be a huge fridge for all the stratifing.

Thank you for your advice all is welcome, the packet said 100 so i'm happy.

lol, youd be surprised how many seeds you can pack into a small tupperware in the freezer
For maples that is a good success rate for a beginner (?)
You should be very happy

Talking about maple seedlings,

After stratification I planted 20 of them in 2 separate pots and after 3 weeks not a single one has sprouted. Do they need more time or shall I forget the whole thing ?

How long did you stratify and what method di you use? Maple seedlings can take 2 years + to come up without stratification, so i would just leave them for now and forget about them (except watering) and one day they may sprout. If you anwser the above q's i can probably give you a more definitive answer.

soaked the seeds in warm water for 24 hrs, then cold stratified them for 60 days.
as you said, I will leave them for the time being and let's see what happens

thanks
