Maple Ground Layer- Tiny Tree Response
I recieved a PM from tiny tree about the Maple ground layer that I started in July of 2002. The article about that can be seen at;PROJECT- Trident Maple III
Later around Feb. 15 2003 I took the layer to a Fresno club meeting to expose the layer and see what I had. That article can be seen at :Unwrapping a present Now this tree, which was a pretty bad tree by bonsai standards, was the subject of a practise session for growing roots. The tree eventhough it has a wonderful root base now, and the fact the the branches are growing with abandon is beside the point. The tree is still ugly. The future lies in the great lower trunk and great root base that it has now. I plan on chopping the tree back to make a shohin tree out of, while removing the top with an air layer. These will be done in the future and I am concentrating on building the engine now. The tree was to be repotted today, it has been in the grow pot for a year almost to the day. This is the way the tree looked before the repot.

I pried the tree from the pot and was suprised at the enormous amount of roots this monster had produced. The roots were easily an inch thick at the bottom of the container with no soil there.

Close up of the roots which come from right above where the ring of bark was peeled. Some of those roots are as big as a pencil now. They also grow all the way around the trunk. Something which was not present when I originaly exposed it.

I easily cut off more then two thirds of the root mass. The tree will respond with massive root growth this spring. It's going to need it for what I am going to do!

Here you can see what left of the original trunk after I cut it off the bad root base. There is only about 3/4 inch of trunk below the roots.

I prepared a nice flat tray as the final pot with wire tie downd and a drainage layer. The mound of soil to rest the tree on was piled on top of the course drainage layer.

The tree is placed and scrunched in. The twisting motion makes sure that some soil is worked into the bottom of the root ball. The tree is wired and the soil filled in and tamped.
In a few months I will layer out the top of the tree, and then chop it down to shohin size. I feel that there are two really nice shohin size trees in the tree, while a couple of the branches may make nice mame trees. I just may take a few of those too! Thanks for listening, Bonsai-al

The finished product. The tree is just showing green tips on the buds. The leaves are right there and ready to open any day. This is the perfect time to repot a maple. Just when you see the buds change. I also had some drizzzle and some sprinkles of rain thru the repot. Talk about perfect repot weather!

Hi bonsaial1. I tryed to PM you but your mailbox was full. This tree has become alot better since the original one! You have truly inspired me for trying this on some of my trees i bought from the a local garden center. And as allways, you have attached good photos=) It is weird that i did never notice this topic when you posted it here, luckily I found it when searching on air layering topics... Where are you going to separate this tree to two shohins?
