Maple Air Layer

Hi,

I air layered this cork bark maple earlier in the year due to an inverse taper problem (i think i have a picture somewhere if any 1 wants to see it before), however i am unsure whether to sever the layer now (i can provide over wintering facilities in a cold green house) or wait until spring next year, if so do i need to protect the exposed area of moss at the top of the pot in which the air layer has taken place? using what?. Any advice welcome.

Cheers Jonny.

Wait at least until fall leaf drop for less stress on the tree, early spring might be even better.

Newly formed roots will need protection from freezing.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt, will just a cloth or peice of material do to serve as protection?

Jonny.

If it keeps the soil from freezing, it should be fine. Here, I would just put it in an unheated greenhouse to modulate the nightime temperature a little, but it looks like you're colder.

Roots that form from layers in the first few months into the first year are usually pretty sappy, white and brittle. Later they will lignify a little and start to turn brown and they can tolerate more cold.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt, I will place it in the cool greenhouse that will be available to me and will monitor the situation.

Cheers Jonny.
