Re: Acer Palmatum cuttings

Hi krunch,

You'll find some basic info about cuttings here

With care, Acer palmatum and its cultivars can be rooted successfully.

Normally rooting takes about 2 months. *You want young, but thick cuttings that are between 3-6 inches long and not very old. *Each should have 3 nodes or so.

Cuts need to be very sharp and sanitation is important. *You can root in peat, peat/perlite, perlite or sharp sand.

Supplemental light is helpful, bottom heat is important, at 70-75 degrees to induce rooting, as is some means to insure that the plants' leaves stay moist throughout the daylight hours but not into the night.

(You can put a donor plant in a greenhouse in late winter to force it into generating some nice succulent cutting material)

Cuttings can also be taken in summer.

Some cultivars of Japanese Maple are not very reliable on their own roots, so grafting is another alternative.

Regards,

Matt
