A Little Help With Seed Germination?
I'm not exactly a newbie to bonsai, I've usually had a tree (mallsai usually
) at all times, but I've never started a tree from a seed. Well, I just ordered some dwarf pomegranate, heavenly bamboo (nandina domestica) and chinese lantern seeds off of eBay, and I'm wondering how I can get them to germinate. I've heared about cold stratification, but I've never tried it and wondered if anyone could give me some hints on how to do it well for those species. Thanks! |

Well with the poms, they grow in nice warm climates so I think the idea of cold stratification would be unnecessary.
If you do a search here on "pomegranate" there were some links to sites that discussed propagation. If memory serves you want to sow the seed fresh from the fruit after cleaning the pulp away. I suspect that nandina would not need stratification of any kind either. Chinese lantern was frost sensitive if I remember, almost like a fucshia, so I really don't think you need to stratify these. Just a nice soak in some lukewarm water. Regards, Matt
