Re: japanese maple cuttings with out root hormone?

Timing is everything, and having sterile soil with bottom heat and some mist going during the day is a big bonus. Spring (with bottom heat) and Summer (provided you have mist) are the best time to take Japanese cuttings for propagation.

I suspect that using a rooting hormone would increase your strike rate about tenfold. Fall is a good time to plant maple seed, though.

Is there a reason you would not want to use rooting hormone? The powdered version Rootone-F has a fungicide that can reduce the loss of cuttings, and the liquid type can be mixed to various concentrations appropriate for hardwood or softwood.

Regards,

Matt

Mac,
Why are you thinking about this? Are you having trouble finding hormone? Im just wondering? Some times I do this just to see If the hormone actually works, you know, an experiment. I usually forget by the time they root which was which, some 'speriment, Huh?

Re: japanese maple cuttings with out root hormone?

Well there is this beautiful japanese maple in my neighbors yard, and when ever im on a nursery or anything i get caught up at looking at the bonsai and pots and forget to get my root hormone, i've done that about 5 times now... but since it greatly induces the chances of rooting, i'll just wait untill i remember i guess....

Sounds like you solved your own problem. People in bonsai in general are patient about things. We talk in terms of years not months or weeks. Take it easy ,have fun!
