also i am trying to make a japanese maple cutting grow roots, i took the cutting wich only has two leaves, a softwood cutting, and put in in a well draining potting soil /sand mix, and cut the top of a 3 liter bottle, and misted it every two hours he first 3 weeks, and than found that i can keep the humidity up and moisture levl by putting a damp paper towel hanging in the neck of the bottle and it has worked excellantfor the last week, just today i stuck my finger in the soil and reached to the bottom of the stem and, didn't find any roots growing, i have been using root stimulators, do you kno ant way that i can make it grow roots

If you did not take at least one node when you took the cutting it is very possible it will never generate roots. Nodes are the sites where the dormant buds exist that can differentiate most easily into buds. leaves and roots.

It can take some time in any case. 6-8 weeks would not be unreasonable, and bottom heat is very useful in promoting root growth.

Regards,

Matt

I would suggest you start with some easy-to-root species like elm, crabapple or wisteria, and grow your Japanese Maple from seed. Maple doesn't root easily.

Nodes are the joints in the stem from which leaves form. Don't give up hope on your experiment. It may work.

Regards,

Matt

Yes for the maple seeds don't sow them too deep. Maybe a 1/8-3/16" at most. Soak them overnight and after planting, water from beneath, don't water from above.

I have almost never seen peach as bonsai so I have no experience with them. The leaves are pretty big.

Why don't you take an air layer from some of your crabapple trees. You can have a large bonsai in a short time using this method. It's probably too late in the season to do it now but next spring would be a good time to start. Here's some info
