Exclamation Jap. Red maple cuttings... HELP!

Hi guys,

My mother has a nice 2-3 yr old Japanese Red maple in her back yard by her pond. It is only about 2' tall with the canopy about the same.

I have tried several times to propagate cuttings from this plant, and have failed twice. This is the most beautiful plant i have ever seen and I would really like to make some healthy cuttings that I may baby for a few years and hopefully have a magnificant tree one day.

Can ANYONE tell me exatcly, step by step, how I should take these cuttings, and where I should put them after they're in a pot. Do i put a bag around it to make a greenhouse? How much water? What soil (ive been using 100% pete for cuttings)

I think ive overwatered the ones I have now... they're starting to turn white and loose their color.

HELP ME HELP ME PLEASE!? lol... I absolutely LOVE the look of JRM's and they're all dying on me.

All my attempts to propagate cuttings from JM usually failed, but surprisingly I've found roots on one of the cuttings which I put just into the water 3 weeks ago. The cutting was this year sproot, in succulent state.

Red Leaf

No hormones this time. I was so disappointed that nothing good happenned with all my attempts to propagate JM cuttings that just stuck it in the jar with water
But I know that the success depends much upon the cultivar - some are better in propagating this way, some are almost impossible.
Good luck to you.

Japanese Red maple

I would like to offer you my sincere and humble apologies if my using the term "Jap. Red Maple in the title of a post in this forum.

I was not aware, until I was notified by PM from a polite user of this forum, that the term "Jap" was considered offensive. I certainly understand why, and I did not consider that at all.. I am from Canada and if I was talking about a "Canadian red maple", I would not be surprised if I said "Can. red maple"

But alas, I meant no harm, insult, or offense to anyone.

Again, My sincere and humble apologies.

Curious, Sky, the maple you want to propagate -- is it a laceleaf?
Those are really hard to root!

I can say I do not know what that is. It looks exactly like a 7 point marijuana leaf however if that helps... lol
