Interested In Trident Maple Seeds... How To Begin...

Out of all the plants, I think the Trident Maple is a good style for me, nothing extreme, and I think the overall look of them are outstanding... okay, Im about to buy seeds on eBay, but is there some stuff I should know first? I live in Phoenix, Arizona in a 9/10 zone which is a hot and dry zone, so this will not be a outdoor plant obviously... So a small pot would be good to start off... what kind of lighting would I need? How much water should a sprouting seed needs? I heard that the water collectors underneath pots are bad? Whats the reason? I dont really want to get stuff wet. Thanks guys... Also, where sold I got to purshase seeds? I checked ebay and its 3.99 plus add 1.50 for shipping... for 5 seeds, I mean, what happens if these seeds dont sprout for me for some odd reason, 5 seems a small amount. Ive been doing some research and found that Tridents have a low germination rate... so basically 5 seeds really isnt going to cut it... where can i get seeds?

3.99 fpr 5 seeds? Thats not good. Success rate for trident maple seeds is about 25%. Maple seeds need to be stratigied, can take about 3 months before it sprouts, if it ever does. Best way to go would be to buy some pre bonsai. There are 2 sellers on ebay. 1 seller sales 3 red japanese maples for $10, about 24"-36". there is another seller selling 7 tridents for $25. the seller of the japanese maples usually has the green leaf jap maple 4 for $10. Either of those would be better than going the seed route. Here are the links

I know it meaned layered, but how you layer these seeds? I dont understand... and can regular potting soil be used with a mixture of sand?

cold stratisfied means soaking the seeds in warm water for a day then wrapping the seeds that sink in a damp paper towel and put in a plastic bag and then into the fridge for about 3 months. The whole process simulates winter for the seeds.
I think trident maple would be tough to impossible to grow indoors, am i right?

You can directly sow, but you will have to sow in late fall, just before winter weather. They wont sprout until the following spring. 2 winters is sometimes needed to naturally stratify the seeds. If you buy the seeds from seedrack on ebay, it will come with instructions on sowing and stratifying, I buy my seed from them.

there is alot of waiting involved with the mape seeds, and could be alot of wasted time if the seeds dont sprout, which is very possible. Thats why i started buying the seedlings about 1 year old for the most part. i still use seed, but atleast by buying the seedlings ive got something to work with just in case the seeds dont sprout.

you can start the seeds indoors and grow under grow lights for a few weeks after they sprout, but after that they need to go to a shady area outdoors for a few weeks to harden off, then to full sun-part shade. Deciduous trees will not live indoors for long periods of time.

Im scared cause the weather outdoors might just kill it too... I live in Phoenix AZ. Its pretty dry/hot weather here... is there other maples that have a better germination rate? and like the indoors?

There are no maples that will live indoors. They really need to be outside in natural conditions. Even living in Arizona, if you could find a spot around the house with sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon. It should be fine as long as you water it regularly. May need watering 2 times a day, once in the morning, once in the evening, never water in the heat of the day, or the leaves will drop. Of course that just an assumption, i dont live in Arizona, but should be fine as long as you provide the proper conditions.
