How often to water cutting with fungicide?
A week ago, I planted a semi-ripe privet cutting in a pot and made a "tent" for it. I had watered it with fungicide.
1. How often am I suppose to water it with fungicide? (The fungicide container didn't give instructions on this) 2. How often am I suppose to water/spray the cutting? 3. The leaves I had left on the cutting started drooping a bit. Is this because it doesn't have enough moisture or due to something else? The leaves on the cutting haven't wilted off and the planted cutting doesn't look dead, so I hope I've done a good job so far... Any answers/advice would be great! |

Im no expert on fungicides mind you, but my leaves droop when the tree is thirsty. Ive never really had them droop any other reason. Thats just my experience though.
I cant really suggest anything with knowing more about what you used etc. (eg was this a concentrate vs premix, three in one solution, brand name etc) If you have those details it would be helpful, or you can try to google the brandname and see what additional info you could find. Are you trying to root this cutting or is this just a new planting? Last edited by watchndsky : 20-May-2007 at 11:42 PM. |

"...watered it with fungicide...". Why are you using fungicide? Pat

Fungicide often used with seeds...
If I'm not mistaken many people will use fungicide when they are growing seedlings to prevent "Damping-off". This is a fungal infection that attacks seedlings before they emerge from the soil or just after they emerge.
I've never used a fungicide with cuttings... To avoid fungal infections with cuttings I think it's more about using a sterile soil than applying fungicide. Read this article from Brent Walston, it may be helpful. http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/cuttings.htm The leaves are drooping because the amount of moisture being supplied has been greatly reduced. You'll probably lose some leaves before things get better. Just be patient and don't drown the cutting. Good luck. |

You were right about the moisture... the leaves are looking less droopy... hopefully they'll be "undrooped" soon ![]() |

It's my first time trying to grow from a cutting.. but the book I was reading ("Pocket Bonsai" by David Prescott, Consultant Editor Colin Lewis) said to include some fungicide in the water... If fungicide doesn't help, won't hurt the plant, right? Lily |

G'day lillilland
I'm not one to quarrel with Colin Lewis...he's one of my favorites. So, please understand that the following are MMYY thoughts, opinions, beliefs, what have you...right or wrong. On the subject of fungicides... However, I'm of the school that believes that you should NEVER use a pesticide, fungicide, etc., unless you have conclusively IDed a problem that calls for the use of a specific "cide". Besides, fungicides are dangerous and toxic. The best "preventative" is to keep your work area, your display area, your tools, and yoursoil "clean". This is what works for me. I haven't used a "cide" of any kind in over 10 years. Also, I don't have a "cide" of any kind among by bonsai supplies... Like I said, these are MMYY thoughts, opinions, beliefs, what have you...right or wrong. And, this is what works for me. Pat
