Hormone rooting powder, Where can I buy it?

I have been trying to grow a new redwood tree based on some cuttings taken 2 weeks ago. _they are rather small without much developed wood. _I read a book I have recently aquired and it talks about some sort of hormone rooting powder that greatly increases the chances of a cutting taking root. _Where can I find some of this stuff?! _I'm new to bonsai, (1 year+) and I have few resources and tools for anything complicated. _If I can not find the rooting powder, or if I find it to be too expensive, what steps can I take to improve my chances of the cutting taking root?
Thanks for any advice!

Re: Hormone rooting powder, Where can I buy it?

Hello Phoenix-X!

Rooting hormone is sold in two forms
  • rooting powder, like Rootone-F, which contains a fungicide that cuttings can be dipped into
  • There are also liquid rooting hormone compounds that can be painted right onto the tree. These solutions tend to be stronger and can be mixed in different concentrations for hardwood and softwood cuttings.
  • You can find both these at most full-service Garden Centers (even Woolworth's Nursery carries the powder) or search on the web for sites like this one
Redwood is generally very easy to root. _
  • I have occasionally had branches that I pruned away from yard trees fall into compost, where they proceeded to root themselves in place.
  • There were at one time small redwood burls sold as "dish forests" at Cost Plus in San Francisco. _I bought a couple of these and instead of placing the burls in water in a dish I painted on rooting compound and planted them in bonsai soil. _Over a couple of months they sent out lots of shoots and roots.

To use the rooting compund,
  • After you take your cutting, use a sharp knife like a grafting knife to clean away the rough edges and leave a nice clean cut. _
  • Then you can moisten the edge with water and sprinkle on the rooting compound or paint on the solution.
  • Next, pot the cuttings up, keep them warm and don't let them dry out!

Good Luck

Excellent!
I'm off to Lowes soon to find some powder, and if they do not have any, than I will order online. I can't wait to snag a branch from my fiance's mother's japanese maple.

Thanks sooo much for the information, I could have spent days looking for that stuff online. I shall add the site you posted to my online bonsai resources.

How about an air layer?

You may find this article on air layering helpful to you. *If you want to propagate twigs older than 1 year, this is the preferred method.

Home Depot sells both the powder and the liquid cheap, they also sell that sph.... whatever it is moss and the really fine sand incredibly cheap (i've even found bonsai pots there). So if you've got one check it out.
