Question Grafting Jap. Maples

I have several mature trees. I am wanting to try grafting. I have tried layering and have great sucess on most of them, but there is about three of the trees that I can't get to layer. They are "Crimson Queen", "Shishigashira"(Lions Head) and "Viridis". Although the Viridis has produced seed last year I have not had any of them come up. I have around 40 2-3 year old standard Acer Plamatum to use as root stock. When is the best time to graft the limb to the root stock?

At the time you graft, you want the rootstock to be active and the scion to be still dormant. Sometimes that means you need to collect your scion wood in winter and then hold it in the fridge (not too cold and wrapped loosely in damp paper towel) for a month or more to let the rootstock start to come out of dormancy

So with your rootstock budding and your scion a month behind, that would be a good time.

Regards,

Matt
