Re: books on seed propagation

Welcome Frenchman,

I ransacked my library for books on propagation and came up with the following. *I updated this link today with the most current prices I could find at Amazon.

Most of these books would need to be special ordered through your bookseller or Amazon. *

#1, The Reference Manual, would be my choice for a book that would tell me how to propagate any of several hundred plants. *The others are listed in no particular order. *#4 is a full course in plant propagation and the various techniques used on different production scales.

1. The Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation *A Practical Working Guide to the Propagation of over 1100 Species, by Michael A. Dirr & Charles W. Heuser, Jr. Varsity Press, Inc. ISBN 0-942375-00-9, paperback 239 pp, ~$35

2. Creative Propagation, A Grower's Guide (Currently Out of Print, but you can follow the link and perhaps find it used) by Peter Thompson, Timber Press, Inc, 1-800-327-5680 *paperback, $22.95

3. Propagation Handbook - Basic Techniques for Gardeners by Geoff Bryant; Stackpole books, 123 pp, paperback, ~ $11.96

4. Plant Propagation - principles and practices by Hudsun T. Hartman, Dale E.Kester and Fred T. Davies, Jr; fifth ed., Prentice Hall Career & Technology, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 07632, ISBN 0-13-681016-0, Hardbound 647 pp. *~$86.00

Re: books on seed propegation

Propagation Handbook is very good at the price. There aren't a lot of diagrams, but it's rich with text and tables and there are no wasted words. You'll find chapters on differnet types of propagation

Creative Propagation takes it to the next step. There are chapters devoted to conifers, shrubs, bulbous plants, lots of diagrams. It will tell you everything from how to collect fern spores to do leaf cuttings. I think it's worth the extra 10-spot.

Regards,

Matt
