Germinating Almond Seeds

Hi All,

This is too funny. About a month ago I stratified some chinese elm, Japanese Red Cedar, and took a crack at some Almonds. They were some almonds that were still in the shell, you know the kind like at Christmas.

Anyway I just thought I would stratify just for the fun of it. The chinese elm, and the Japanese Red Cedar has no signs of life, but the almonds are cracking and sending out the first primary roots.

The question is now what?......I am excited with my first stratification, now what do I do?......Are almonds actually good for the bonsai world?

I would appreciate any help.

aloha,
H

Well done on the almonds. I think it will take a few years till you can start to shape them but yes - they do live as bonsai. i only have one, its not a good one, i dug it up and most of it died, so i figure one day i will carve it...

Good luck with your babies...

Thanks Jules,

I think you might have noticed in some of the past threads, that I am moving from Kauai to Maui for a few months. As you can see this is a bittersweet accomplishment. The only bummer is that after Maui I may be moving to Alaska and won't be able to take any plants.

I may have to abandon my Almond babies, but that's ok maybe I'll plant them in my friends back yard and "harvest" the trees in a few years......hahaha.......

Aloha,
Harold

Almonds are probably as good a candidate for bonsai as any other species of prunus. They have beautiful flowers, but you might want to go for a slightly larger bonsai, because they have relatively large leaves. I've tried several times to grow almonds, but everytime my dog has rooted for the nuts in the pot and ruined my chances.

Does anyone have any photos of their almond bonsais? I had considered this species but got discouraged by the large leaf sizes. The trees seem to go naturally into layers (at least at full size)
