In our front garden is a large forsythia that has ben neglected somewhat, and is a bit like a giant broom. I decided to chop it down drastically to regenerate it, and in the meantime I left one branch unmolested, and I made an air layer from it. It has some prety gnarly branches there and the stem is about 2 inches thick. Will post a pic as soon as i gt a mo.
I have been told that forsythias dont work as their stems are hollow but boy did i have a hard time sawing them! Hollow my foot!

Forsythia root fairly readily in the ground. Just cut off a branch and stick it in

yes i know about forsythia, but this way i get a good thick stem to start with and a head that looks pretty cool, with potential. In other words i get a potensai rather than just a rooted cutting.
