Flowering cherry air layer

I have a flowering cherry which is not bonsai trained in the small front garden, it's about 8' tall and obviously not trained as bonsai.

What maximum branch thickness will air layering be successful at? The tree is quite healthy. I am based in NW England if that helps.

BTW - nice forum, I couldnt find any help like this when I started up!

You can air layer anything from 3/4" up to 3" or so I would guess; I am sure the big the layer the longer it will take. I would say around 1 1/2" to 3" is certainly possible.

Selecting the correct branch is the key...because once the layer takes and roots start to go you sever the branch below the layer..I am sure you know this already.

Anyways...then you pot the whole thing in a deep container [not a bonsai pot] and let the roots develop. Tie the layer in very well and secure it to the container. It helps if there is a low branch an 1" or so ABOVE where you create the layer.

Also...since cherry trees [and most prunus varieities] grow very cylindrical branches....you need to select your branch so that it has some movement and taper...something interesting or unique...perhaps a twist or curved branch. Otherwise...why go thru the trouble of layering at all?

Experiment on a small branch say 1" in diameter as a test case, esp. if you have your eye on another branch; this way you can see how the whole process works.

Tom....
