Florida Crape Myrtle (Air Layer)

Hello all,

I finally separated my crape Myrtle air layer!! I thought I would post some pics and get some future design feedback. The first picture is of the future front, or maybe I should say the possible future front. The second picture is of the scar left when I took care of a little reverse taper issue. The third picture is of the piece of tree I removed and am now trying to root!! Knowing Crape Myrtles I don't think there will be a problem growing some new roots, but you never know.

Finally, the fourth picture is of the mother tree with a very distinguishable chunk taken out of it. I had the entire branched wrapped in Sphagnum, plastic and tin foil for 6 weeks and my finance never even noticed. The day I removed the cutting she finally noticed I had been "working" on the tree and was slightly frustrated. It does look very bad!! However in defense of actions I must say that that branch had been eying me all season. hahaha.

Anyway, enjoy the pictures and please put your 2 cents in.

I bought 3 Crape Myrtles this year all together in a 15 gallon pot. They didn't grow for about the first 6 weeks because they were so rootbound. The rootball was like a brick. I used a saw to divide the rootball into 3 sections, then hacked away some more on each of the rootballs. Each tree went from theoretically having a 5 gallon rootball to a rootball a little larger than a soda can. I potted each tree in a miracle gro type potting soil, put them in full sun and gave them plenty of water. Three weeks later and they're all growing like weeds. I did this in August, the hottest time of year here.
Just thought I'd post my story of Crape Myrtle resilience,
Myrtle
