Fertilizing seedlings?

Hello all

I just had some 100 trident maps seedlings hatch as well as some chinese elms and several japanese white pines (yey!) and now I'm wondering whether and how I should feed them. I've read the article at Evergreengardenworks and it says one should fertilize, but how much and how often...

If anyone has personal experience with that, I would appreciate if you could share it.

Otherwise I guess I will have to be the lab rat and waste some of my 100 precious tridens grasslings

Best wishes
Kestutis

Fertilize normally after the first true leaves have formed. Prior to this, they get everything they need from seed. A simple way to do this is to use a 20-20-20 soluble according to the instructions, usually something like 1 Tblsp per gallon and apply every other week. Don't worry about 'burning' them. As long as you follow label directions they will be fine. I don't find seedlings or new cuttings to be any more sensitive to fertilizer than any other plants and young plants require regular feeding since they have almost no storage capacity.

Or you could sprinkle organic fertlizer on the surface. Personally I much perfer this way , to promote a healthy soil and get a real sturdy and disease resistant plant. Lots has been written on this subject. http://www.dirtdoctor.com/view_question.php?id=131.

Just wanted to give you a second opinion, high nitro is not the only way.
