deshojo cuttings
hi has anyone ever had success with deshojo maple cuttings i have tried and tried but not one so far i have tried taking cuttings with about 3-4 nodes softwood and semi ripe dipped in clonex which contains iba and put in a heated propogator with variouse different soil mixes including peat, pearlite andvermiculite, pearlite and vermiculite and peat and sand i have also tried hormones containing naa and i mist regularly.within about 2weeks the leaves are still nice and red/green but the stems under the soil have turned black any replies would be great .i know that grafting is the preffered method i just wonder if it is possible and if so why do my stems turn black .look forward to hearing from you byeeeeeeeeee

Sounds like they are rotting on you.
Maybe try something with a little captan or benomyl in it and don't keep the soil so wet. i.e. Lose the peat and anything else that retains water. If the mist is going you don't need to hold moisture in the soil Regards, Matt

Well I have seen some methods were the do not use compost to root cuttings. Try to live a cut in a glass of water with some diluted hormone 10% - 20%. Im trying that now.

Rootone-F has a fungicide in it (not sure if it is captan or benomyl) But there are soil drenches that would be used periodically and separate from the rooting hormone. Regards, Matt

hi alex
i still havent had any success with my deshojos but last year i rooted some trident maples and some palmatums during the summer i was concerned when they went into dormancy as they were so fragile but i just left them to do their thing and they started to bud break in the spring so .i also had a trident maple cutting that i kept going through winter in a heated propogator when the warmer weather came i i gradually introduced it to a normal enviroment but it died .if i were you i would try leaving it alone just make sure it doesnt get too wet/ dryand it will all happen again in spring fingers crossed regards from craig |

The only success I've had with deshojo has been when I've made a "V" cut below a node. I think this gives a greater surface area for the roots to grow. Once the cuttings have taken however the seedling needs care for a few years, as I've lost quite a few up to 3 year old.
