cuttings...
so i took some cuttings a little more than a week ago. cause i seen some tiny buds on there, Very small. But they were from a tree outside.
and today i look at the cuttings and the buds are pretty big now, and are green and opening. I know the cuttings dont have roots yet, its only been a week. So does this happen often? Are the buds opening just to dry out and die in another week. Or are they gonna Keep growing like that? |

It could go either way. The stored energy in the cuttings can cause them to bud, flower, and leaf out beofre dying, but some may take and root. With most trees you'll have more rooting success with cuttings that already have leaves. The rooting is a response to needing roots to support the leaves. When dormant they have no such need. On the other hand, I have rooted some things like grapes over the winter.

What importance a title

Don't know if I agree with more success from cuttings that have leaves. I propagate elm, maple, juniper, hawthorn, cotoneaster, and cherry hardwood cuttings taken in December, January, and February. All of these I can assure you are leafless and dormant. Out of about a hundred cuttings per species I run about a 80% success rate for the exception of the Junipers which run about 60%.
You may find that leaf reduction or at least leaf cutting will ensure a more successful out come. Brent Walston covers the subject in depth here One last note. You are pushing the limits of cuttings for this time of year. What you sniped of the tree would be considered a hardwood cutting and the success rate for that type of cutting is greater when they are in deep dormancy. So don't be disappointed if you find your cutting leafs and then wilts. Your next window of opportunity will be this May or June for softwood cuttings if you choose to pursue this........good luck

Careful, this insinuating someone is a thief borders on slander, the internet does not protect you from retribution.

Did you post this in the right thread, this is entirely different from those thief threads
. No apology needed to me anyway, just sounded strange to me especially after tachigi post.
