couple of sanjose junipers from cuttings
Last year, I stuck six cuttings from a parent san jose juniper into some small pots with a mixture of lava sand, expanded shale, and landscaper's mix in equal parts.
I was told these should have been struck in coarse sand for better sucess, and this is probably true. However, I had these two survive and as you can see they are growing quite vigorously. This year, I modified the soil mix making it a bit more course, and heavier on the sand side, and have set about a dozen kishu juniper cuttings. I'll let you know how those turn out same time next year.

San Jose Cuttings
Hi Ralph,
Good luck with your cuttings. That particular juniper has always been my favorite. They do some amazing things on their own without much training, but they do take a while to do them. I did some cuttings years ago and then lost interest in bonsai for a time. Got rid of everything but a few favorites, one of which was a surviving cutting. It was 6 years old and mostly ignored except for water and feeding when I suddenly realized it had a nice trunk developing. They tend to curve all on their own. This plant has gone through some "reversals of fortune" over the years but is still fun to look at. Old and ugly but fun to look at just the same. It has had several restylings over the last 28 or so years. I have taken some cuttings from it and one of those is about 25 now. When I get home from North Carolina, I will post a picture of them. I know you will have a good time with yours. susieq |
