bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Common Olive

Common Olive
Olea europaea
Does anyone know whether I have to scratch the seed coat of these seeds?
I also hear that germination could take over a year... I am glad I am patient.
Thanks,
Justin

I tried growing it from seeds myself... Yes you do have to have the seeds extracted from ripe olives... you scratch the one end.. (make sure you do the the end..) what that does is encourage germination... and after that you need bottom heat... and plant it in a well drained soil... not peat moss.....
If you're lucky it well take couple months... I gave up and bought some cuttings.... much faster way.

I can't help you with any seed propagation for olives as I don't have to grow them from seeds when I can just go down the road and dig these up.

Treenut, there are advantages to living almost anywhere on this earth. I'd say collected Olive Trees are one of yours. Nice material, is it representitive of what is out there?

Treenut, thanks for the offer. I know where I can get that dump truck, it is a bit smaller but it will do! Oh yea, got any ideas how I will get it over the water? Customs may present a little sticking point also.

Come up with some answers, let me know!

Thanks, I had about 9 seeds so I scratched 3 by the top, 3 by the bottom, and 3 not at all. So I will keep everybody posted if anything comes out.
I unfortunately don't live in Australia, and there isn't much to collect.
The only advantage of growing from a seed for me is that by the time it germinates, sprouts, and becomes a bonsai canidate; I will be well read.
Thanks,
Justin
