Cold Stratification
About a month ago I started getting interested in bonsai. So I did what every good noob does and ordered some seeds:-) After doing some research I decided to hold off on the seeds and just start with some nice little indoor trees.
Now for the question... About a month ago (before knowing any better) I started cold stratification on some japanese white pine seeds. If I leave them in until next spring (7 months total) will they be ok? They look like they are getting soft now and I'm worried about where they will be in another 6 months. Should I abandon all hope on these seeds? When is the right time to start cold strat? |

Here is some info on cold stratification of Japanese White Pine that should tell you what you need(ed) to know. I'm not sure what you mean by soft - whether the seed coat is softened or the seed itself has begun to rot.
http://www.bonsaiweb.com/seeds/care/care.cgi?9 I don't know where you are located as there is no info in your profile, but presumably you could sow them in late fall and let them overwinter outdoors. Regards, Matt

Where is the info?
When I said soft I meant the seed coat. I don't think the seed is rotting. I live in Columbus OH and it usually drops well below freezing in the long winters here. I updated my profile just for you Matt. I'm not sure exactly what zone I'm in but when I figure it out, I'll make sure to update that too. What I needed to know was if it would hurt the seeds to leave them in my fridge for seven months. I understand that putting the seeds in a moist environment and then placing them in the fridge is supposed to simulate winter. Most winters don't last seven months so will the extra long cold period hurt the seeds? One last thing. You see, I post stuff in the beginners forum because I'm new at this. People who read the beginners forum should realize that they are dealing with beginners. So when we write stupid things or post dumb question, hopefully they will cut us a break because we are new at this. For instance, I didn't think to tell about my location in the previous post. Is that important information that is necessary for a proper answer? Of course it is. But since I'm a beginner maybe you should just ask me for the information rather than point out the fact that I screwed up by not posting it. "I'm not sure what you mean by soft" -Just ask me then. "I don't know where you are located as there is no info in your profile" -I'm sorry, please don't crucify me for not posting my location. It seems like you need to point out the fact that I'm an idiot when it comes to bonsai. People already know this. THAT IS WHY I POST IN THE BEGINNERS FORUM! Us beginners are going to have specific questions that could probably be answered in other forums. But we are still beginners. In the beginners forum I should be able to get a simple answer that I can understand. People know they are dealing with a beginner. When my post gets moved to the BONSAI PROPAGATION Forum or where ever, no one knows I'm new at this and I just end up looking stupid. So please stop moving my posts. And if us noobs annoy you, then just let someone else respond to our posts. You people are willing to wait 20 years for a decent juniper, try to show a little patience with people who are trying to get started in the wonderful art of bonsai. |

Hoffman, please calm down.
No one said you are screwing up, you are reading things into my posts that simply aren't there. I wrote: Quote:
That is not a request for information or a chastisement of any kind. You could have been in Alaska or Hawaii. I don't want to give you misinformation. You wrote: "So please stop moving my posts. And if us noobs annoy you, then just let someone else respond to our posts." The post was moved to the proper forum with an auto forwarder in the old forum, so you or any concerned party could find it. Why was it moved? Scroll to the bottom of the page, and take a look at the "Related Threads" "...It seems like you need to point out the fact that I'm an idiot..." "...I'm sorry, please don't crucify me..." "...try to show a little patience with people... Exactly!

I've read the related threads. I didn't see anything about leaving white pine seeds in cold strat for seven months.
I'll make this very easy. Is it ok to leave Japanese White Pine seeds in a near freezing moist environment for seven solid months? Yes or No? For the love of all that's holy! It's a simple question which requires a simple answer. Please don't make me scour all 10 million threads to find a specific answer. It's ok Matt - I respect you even if you are noob hater! |

What's a noob?
This e-mail lingo/stuff is very confusing to a lowly nurse and non- techie as well as a new bonsai artist too! (lol, imho, btw etc etc!) It seems to me that emotions and misunderstanding can easily be read into most posts because there's no face to face contact! Stay cool out there - you all! ![]() Bonsai Talk Rules!

Jeez, Hoffman. You act like the people here owe you something. Nothing could be further from the truth. You post your questions and take what you get, and you got more than you deserve in my opinion. It looks to me like you've bitten the hand that could have fed you. There are lots of bonsai forums out there and I've visited many of them. Matt is the hands down winner when it comes to teaching noobs or newbies about proper bonsai techniques. You have really only cheated yourself out of a good learning opportunity.
