Why is this happening, some are alright, and some are doing this. What am I doing wrong? I have the seedling trays on a tray, and I am moving them to advantagious positions as required.

Hi Paddles This could be a number of things. Have you had frost recently? The other reason may be the mix you put the seeds in. I use sand and a little peat moss for cuttings maybe seeds need something similar (I don't grow seeds). Your mix seems a bit rough, is that pine bark in there? It could be over watering and the mix is retaining too much moisture. Perhaps someone with seed growing knowledge may possibly stop by here and give advice.

That withering of the stem close to the soil line is the classic symptom of 'damping off' disease.
"Damping off is due to several soil and water-borne fungi (particularly those in the genera Pythium, Phytophthora and Rhizoctonia) that attack the stem base, which becomes thin and brown and a white fluffy fungus may develop. The same fungi may attack below ground causing an apparent failure of seed to germinate (pre-emergence damping off). The disease is encouraged by cool, humid conditions and overwatering." (Royal Horticultural Society Online). You should remove the affected seedlings and treat the rest with a copper based fungicide. Avoid using a systemic though. Chinese elm do not like systemics.
