Bonsai seeds dying

I keep having my seedlings die off....
They will sprout like crazy but then all of the sudden they all just wither and die overnight. It has happened 3 times now they live for a month or two then bamm they die. I'm using peat moss as my sowing material and I have flourescent glow lamps as my light source. Does anyone have any insight or suggestions?? I have about 50 seeds just finishing their cold strat and i don't want them to die like the ones before.

Re: Bonsai seeds dying

I'd reallly like some folks to speculate on this one as well. I have the same problem. I use pre-made peat moss planters that expand when you water them. I get great germination rates. I use bottom heat. I don't notice any mould. I don't let them sit in water. I spray occasionally. Then bamm, a month later they're dead.

Re: Bonsai seeds dying

It could be "damping off" if they just sort of fall over, that's probably it.

Search the forum here on the phrase DAMPING OFF and also look in bonsaiTALK Links

Regards,

Matt

Or "Captan America?" or maybe the "Magnificent Sevin?"

Re: Bonsai seeds dying

Matt and Al: You too can do much better than the above posts.

Keven and Michael: Matt is correct your problem is damping off which is caused by fungus attacking the soft stem of the plant at the soil line, first solution is to change your soil and get rid of the peat. Use instead a bottom layer of good bonsai mix and a top layer of sifted bonsai mix that is only 1/16 in. Second make shure that your soil is steralized, I heat mine to 120 degrees for twenty minnets. Last if necessary use a small amount of fungacide in your water after the seeds sprout up. If you can follow these points your success rates should get much better......ripsgreentree

Re: Bonsai seeds dying

Rip, I find it interesting that the no-dampoff seed sprouting mix is composed of...

100% milled, long-fibered SPHAGNUM MOSS.

I don't know exactly what that means, but maybe we should get rid of everything except the moss

Re: Bonsai seeds dying

Matt: I have not had any problem starting seeds in fine bonsai soil or on a good red wood humis.
Black pine Celtis Chinese rain tree Carob are all started in bonsai soil.
Maple and elms are started on red wood humis.
All Oaks are pre sprouted and then planted directly into growing beds.
Most everything else that we are playing with is started from cuttings.
Right now the only thing that I am having trouble with is umai but I will keep at them until I succede.
I do not like spagum moss peat or vermiculite for starting seeds or cuttings. But that is just me and I can be incorrect.
