Bald Cypress Propagation By Seed

I collected some bald cypress seeds today and I want to try and get them to germinate. The only information I found says to soak the seeds in ethyl alcohol for 5 minutes then cold stratify for 3 months. What exactly is ethyl alcohol? Any other tips?

It's grain alcohol, the kind used for drinking. You may find it sold also as rubbing alcohol, but it is more common to see isopropyl alcohol sold for that purpose. High proof vodka would probably be a good substitute.

BTW, cuttings should be a cinch, and probably the preferable method. The collected mature cypresses I brought back a couple years ago were about 18-24 inches across with no roots to speak of.

Regards,

Matt
