Another Layer Question

Ok here we go
I was cutting a broken limb in a big E Red Cedar yesterday and came across a perfect specimen for layering, I think (not on the broken limb). Well the ting is, It would have to be layered as close to a bain branch as possable. the main branch is about 4" thick.
I made this drawing as close as I could come to the actual circumstances, only thing the specimen is about 20' up in the tree. Thats you yall get this drawing.

Ok I know I should layer this in early spring, but is there any preperations that I could do in the meantime to greaten my chances for sucess?

is it possable to layer a branch so close to its base?

i don't know if this would work, but you could make root on the trunk (or big branch)of the mother tree, and than cut it convave w/ the branch along the dotted line
