Ok, let's see who all runs to there computer to blast me on this one, LOL. It's a joke, lighten up people
I have 2 Dawn Redwoods of the Gold Rush strain. They both over 3 feet tall. I am wanting them to cut them back( a trunk chop) shorter but I do not want to waste what I'll be cutting off. When is the appropiate time to do this? If it is best next season then I am fine with that. I'm in no rush. I just feel why cut off and let die when I can strive to get 2 more trees. ps: these are very well branched |

If you'd been at the study group last week (save your sob stories and excuses: work....really?? you can come up with better than that) you'd have seen the beginnings of an air layer on a trident. I'd say you're on the late end of when its recommended. I probably wouldn't attempt it if you don't have a place to protect it during winter. I'm not saying you have to have a greenhouse, but you might want to start planning on a cold frame come winter.
ps. I don't know if it'll be ready at this months meeting, but I'll probably bring it and we'll see how the roots are looking and go from there.

If they're only three feet tall, I doubt they have a substantial trunk. Consider what diameter you'd like the trunk to be and plan accordingly. It may be wise to let it grow unchecked for a year or two (or more) before cutting. In any case, you have about two to three months of growing season left and would be wise to wait until next year. If they are pencil sized, you could probably get away with it, but do you want pencil sized trunks?

First, wayne: I am a bit aggitated by your comment. Not all of us have a cushy job only working Mon-Fri with weekends off. Not all of us work normal hours and not all of us make a decent earning at work. I told you and john when I first attended that I may not be able to attend EVERY meeting. But if me having to work every other weekend is a sob excuse to you then so be it. And if me not attending every meeting is a problem to you and others then it would be best that I no longer attend anymore meetings. I don't need my honest word critiqued as an excuse. Also as I have told you before that I do have a greenhouse. So building a cold frame is unnecesary. And I did state that I could wait til next year to do the airlayering. That also goes for you too quinn.
Now to you quinn: These trees are not pencil trunks. Yes one them has a trunk just a little bigger than the width of a pencil but that starts from where there was a cutback of some sort well before I bought these. From soil line to about 3 inches above the trunks are about an inch. The rock in the photos of both trees' trunks is 1 1/2 inches wide. But I'll let you look over the pics and you can be the judge...and jury. I am not trying to start a fire or an argument but I am going to say what is on my mind and not sit back and take it. |

OK, I'll bite, Why? These are straight as posts and even if they had 3" trunks would still be straight as posts. Are you planning a forest? Multiple formal uprights.
Not being critical, just trying to figure this one out. John

Yep, you bit. What is wrong with them being "straight as posts"? Isn't formal upright one of the styles? If I am to disfigure it what is your suggestion? And yes I was planning to maybe use these in a forrest planting along with other DR's I have that are way smaller than these 2.

My Turn.
Your majesty, I am hoping you know those guy's and they are taking it as a joke, but so far this isn't reading very user friendly. If this is the way you intend to spread your Charm, don't expect much from this site, as you have already been a bit turnoffish to a very respected member here.
Speaking your mind is all well and good, but don't expect everyone to bow to your thrown - or toilet which ever it is you sit on.

McSpeed is absolutely right... unless you all are just joking and teasing, and are friends, you may want to tone down, O Crowned One. You are talking to some of our most respected members and if you want advice you are going to stop getting answers from anyone.
![]() If you want to airlayer your trees, wait for next year to give them the most chance to root before seperation. You aren't going to get much taper on a 1" trunk by starting a new leader, these trees grow so quickly that the difference in diameter will quickly disappear. But if you want a forest anyway, you aren't really looking for strongly tapered individual trees necessarily. Joanie

My comments seemed to strike a nerve, and for that I sincerely and wholeheartedly apologize (and did in person (sort of) in chat last night as well). My comments probably set the tone for the rest of his post so I'll step up and take the blame for those as well. He may not think the same about me, but Steven's a good guy.
Anyone else have any more information that may help him? ie: hardiness of freshly-rooted Dawn Redwoods in SC winters, how quickly they root (enough to support themselves) from air layering?
