Airlayering manzanita

Is it too late to start airlayering the manzanita that are growing naturaly in my back yard? There are several branches that look very promising.
Any suggestions on what type of medium would work best, and/or the most succesful techniques.
These are some pics of the tree in question.

I have no idea. Every post I have seen about manzanita seems to be related to failure to keep them alive (even when they have roots). They sure look interesting, though.

Regards,

Matt

I collected 5 manzanitas from the side of the mountain I live on over the winter. 2 are still alive and well. I've actually been doing some pinching of new growth on the larger of the two, and it has done some back-budding - not alot but some.

They are notorious for not living long in pots. I'm not sure if they will layer easily, but I did observe some on the mountain that had self ground layered low hanging branches.

Good luck with yours.

Two items of interest-

1. Look at manzanita in the wild, the cluster formations are by the tree
itself. They ground layer readily. Try bend the desired area down,
pin it to the ground, and place compost around it ( the bush uses its
own droppings) the water.

2. Consider going to Colden Stat this November. Greg Brenden is doing a
workshop on collected manzies. I have seen the trees he is bringing-
get in line, they are great raw material.

Azcelt,
Working in Tucson, 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix, 10 degrees hotter
than Pat in Oracle-

I wish you good luck. All I really know about manzanita is the wood is extremely hard. The branches don't bend readily either. If you can do it, I'm very interested. I tried a couple collecting, but they did not survive. But I love the trunks, the bark, the tree in general.

I've posted this pic. before, (sorry) of a manzanita in my back yard that has ground-layered itself. Havn't found any info on them yet, so I'm experimenting on some. I'll keep notes in my journal, not that I'm expecting anything noteworthy!
