AirLayer CrabApple

Soooo, there is this crabapple in the back of my yard. It has been there forever (well I've lived here for 26 years and it has always been here). It is growing as a bush, no trunk to speak of. I am going to do some airlayering on this crabapple. Are there any things I need to know specific to a crabapple layer? I plan on starting the layers after the flowers finish blooming! Is this good or is there another method?
Thanks!!! If I'm successful I will have several new trees, even enough to trade, I'll keep you all posted!

Re: AirLayer CrabApple

Yes the air layer would be a very good way to propagate crabapple.

Some growers have had success with short cuttings up to thumb size thickness taken in July, but they need bottom heat and mist.

Regards,

Matt

Re: AirLayer CrabApple

howdy

my experiment with my crabapple (4 pics to follow)

1) layering is great fun, to see those tiny roots growing out of nowhere....awwww

2) this layer was done in summer - but we had a very mild summer here this year... the layer is still surviving. It is in a bonsai pot because it was a handy container at the time. it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the tree to fruit. It only fruits every second year, must be stress.

3) Anyone commenting on the colour of my swimming pool will be beaten over the head with a dead bonsai. (jokes) No really, the pool pump was being fixed and it took 2 weeks...grrr....not going back to that pool guy again!

I have photos of lots of my layered trees, apple worked well.

Good luck

Jules

Re: AirLayer CrabApple

Thanks Jules for the pixs. I will try and do the same. At the moment it is still possible for a frost here, soooo, I will wait another week or tow and then do it. Keep looking and I will try and post some pixs myself. Jay
