Air Layering Or Trunk Choping Elms & Zelkovas

I have a couple of elms and zelkovas that I want to air layer. Two have broken buds already, one is just starting, and the others havent started yet. Can I air layer at this time?
If I have to, I will trunk chop them down to the new leader, but I'd rather get new tree's out the deal.

Well, I found out that it was o.k. to air layer now(via. due dilligance). The other thing I found out is that the trees that have'nt started to bud might in fact be dead. I scrapped a little bark and there was hardly any green to them. We had a horrible winter this year. I'm gonna wait another month or two befor I trash them because it seems that our seasons here in Ohio are a month or two behind.

By the way do I have cooties or something? No ones been replying to any of my posts I promise my frog will not give you worts

Dood,
No cooties just busy. plus I think some dont look down this far on the bonsaitalk start page.
Yes good time to airlayer. Elm-Zelcova should be well fed, and do a complete and deep ring barking because they are prone to callusing over the cut and not giving roots in that area.
You can separate this year if you have a long growing season or wait until spring if you want to be safer. G'luck
