Red Leaf Air Layering Sango Kaku Maple above graft

Hi All,

My question for anyone in the know is...

Is it OK to try to effectively remove the graft on a Sango Kaku maple by air layering a sturdy tree approx 3 ft high and 1/2 inch diam trunk above what I imagine is an Acer palmatum rootstock?.

I find the union of green Acer palmatum rootstock and red bark of Sango kaku distasteful and thought it might be ok to air layer the tree above the graft point to reduce the height of the trunk and remove the grafted rootstock?

I have read on this forum of people air layering sango kaku's but it wasnt clear whether this was from grafted stock.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I am not clear as to whether this is a good idea as I dont want to kill the tree off coz my girlfriend gave it to me for xmas

Rick

I have successfully air layered coral bark maple from garden center bought stock without problems. However, if the tree is 3 feet tall and 1/2 inch in diameter I'd be inclined to let it grow out to thicken the trunk before an airlayer to improve the base.
