Air Layering Pine?
I was just reading an article in International Bonsai issue 1989 #1 about air layering white pine. I never hear anyone talk about airlayering pine and thought it couldn't be done. Does anyone have any experience with it? The artilce also says that the best time to do it is October and November in Okayama, Japan. How does that relate to our October here in the pacific northwest USA?
Thanks everyone, Sandi |

I think they use Okayama, Japan just because the Bonsai Village is there. I have no idea what their October/November is like. I was at the Bonsai Village at the end of July, and it was HOT and Humid, just like the rest of Japan around that time.

I have a black pine, which I would like to air layer, to get a decent nebari of it. Is it possible to be done? If someone knows how to do it or has a link to an article, I would like to read about it... Thanks in advance...

You would probably do it the same as any other layer on a decidous tree. The only thing I know is that I read that it would take alot longer than on decidous, like two maybe three times longer.

i have heard of pine layering taking up to two years! i would think you would use the same hormone, i have never seen a special pine rooting hormone.

airlayering pines is extremely difficult. First of all, there is a different technique: it's called tourniquet and what you basically have to do is to wrap a wire around the trunk at the desired place you want to get the roots. The wire will bite into the bark eventually. When you see sap flowing from the wound you should add some rooting hormone and put the airlayer in a pot.Rooting pines take about 3 years. I have no experience with airlayering pines, this is what i have read.Keeping them alive is hard aswell after airlayering. If i were you i would buy another pine
