I just think it's important to keep things in the context in which they were written. It's clear from stephentoddpopes post that he's just trying to find info on layering. He meant no disrespect, just in a hurrry I suppose. As you say, a private message would have been the best way to handle this one.

-ROTFL- i agree with Jules OMC, you really gotta lay off the hallucinogenic drugs... the u.s. certainly has had some sad moments in its past. theres probably a lot more to come. |

Stephen,
The answer to your question is there...it just got lost in the bird droppings. Early Spring would be a good time to air layer your Japanese Maple - and yes, it should be well rooted by late summer. |

stephentoddpope..fighting? whos fighting?
![]() no really, id love to hear some advice from others (we know you are out there)on this subject too. I usually layer maples in fall, but have one to do spring (now). Should i wait till its leaves are hardened off or just as buds break into leaves or now(its budding but not leafing yet)? Oh its a japANESE maple also (sorry couldnt help myself). Cheers Jls In the spirit of learning |

Jules and Stephen
I've read that one should go ahead and layer a maple right before bud-break in early spring. The logic is that the accelerated growth while leafing out serves to stimulate root formation. I don't have enough first-hand experience to be able to say whether this is actually better than doing it a month later. I'd be nervous about doing a maple in the fall if I had too cold of winters. Probably do-able in Seattle; I wouldn't try it in Michigan. You think old roots are unprotected from frost in a bonsai pot, try brand new roots in plastic-wrap and spagnum moss! -Old Mister

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Good Day to all.. Regarding the layering, it is a function of where the tree is. Different growing conditions will tolerate different layering times. Generally speaking whats been written here is what I've learn to be the way to go.
As for Politcally Correct. Perhaps the world is more alert to slurs, be they intentional or by accidental. Nothing wrong with having them pointed out! We should be extremely careful here. As a forum, we do not know the others on the list. The only way we 'see' each other is with our words. Being respectful of others is never a bad thing. And yes, I'm sure all of us have said something that was 'incorrect'.... sooooo lets try and be careful and have a good time.

i am not taking it off a ahohin, i want to make a shohin
