Japanese maple

can't you people PLEASE exert yourselves and type those extra five letters? It's really not all that hard.

-a-n-e-s-e

When and where I grew up, "Jap" was a racial slur on par with k--- or n-----.

Sorry, but this pisses me off every time I see it here or anywhere else.

Oh. And you want to airlayer your damn tree next spring. And it should have roots by September if all goes well.

That's ridiculous. He's talking about a tree for God's Sake. Not a person. It's nothing like calling someone the N word.

I must have been snoozing when political correctness took over the world.

Jls hands OMC (who is too lazy to type his whole name) some 'be nice' pills and tells him to go sit in the corner

stephentoddpope, if its a maple you care about, wait for spring. It is the best time to attept to layer your JAPANESE maple. I live in aust (RALIA) and so i can layer maples in autumn too, late summer early/autumn is fine if it doesnt get cold too quickly and you need to have mild winters or offer the JAPANESE maple some protection from the cold. If its a maple you just plan to practice on, I'd say go for it.

All ya'll are right, a private message would have sufficed here where stephentoddpope was concerned. But I've seen this usage a dozen times here this month, and I really dislike it for exactly the reason that stephen points out in the previous post. So I figured I'd make my point where people would see it.

So yeah, he took the heat for the last dozen posts of this sort. Sorry, stephen. Thanks for being a good sport.

Tony, I think that stephentoddpope's above post makes it quite clear why this is not just PC-ism run amuck. To put another way, most of my memories of that particular word involve hearing it as an eight-year-old while standing next to my best friend (a Japanese American). It was always a prelude to severe ass-whoopin' by the "big kids." And let me tell you, according to those kids my friend had a "jap haircut" and a "jap lunchbox" and "jap books" and if he'd had a tree at home it probably would have been a "jap maple." So sure, I'm sensitive. But don't think that calling Pinus nigra a "n_ pine" makes it ok, just because you're talking about a tree.

Or just write me off as a PC bastard. That's cool too. Seriously.

Cheers,
OMC
